Workshop "Rising Primary Education in the Years 2000s: Bottlenecks and Improvements"

March 5th  , 2012

Location:

CCUN Boss Room 8th Floor

From 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm

MMC is joining again The 56th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (February 26 - March 9, 2012). We are organizing a one-day workshop on Global Young People and Education that will provide a platform for discussion of issues relating to education around the world. We are inviting students from the wider New York area to identify burning issues about education with respect to one or more countries of their choice. We will meet every weekend in February 2012 for group discussion in preparation for the workshop at the United Nations.

This participatory workshop will examine the current state of primary and secondary education in specific countries from the point of view of young people themselves with a few carefully selected discussants. The drop out of girls at the end of primary education, thus excluding them from access to higher education and technical subjects (STEM) will be discussed comparatively, given cultural, economic and historical  blockages, or lack thereof in specific countries including developing countries (Tchad, Philippines, others) and the US. The future of education in those countries will be assessed.

This is an opportunity for learning how to make a formal presentation and/or paper on a topic of interest related to education. We will guide you through the entire process of preparing a presentation. During the next two months, we will be meeting on the weekends to discuss relevant issues and select the best presenters for the workshop. Possible themes for presentations include:

  • Educational achievement and reasons for lack of it among genders

  • Gender differences in professional realization

  • Institutional mechanisms for the advancement of women

  • Women’s right to literacy and freedom through education

  • Methods of ensuring equal access to education for women around the world.

Students interested in presenting, need to fill out this application and e-mail it to apply@mmcnyc.com.
